Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has come to the defence of match officials at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, insisting refereeing controversy is not unique to Africa.
Concerns over officiating have dominated discussions following the quarter-final matches, with Algeria formally petitioning CAF and FIFA after their defeat to Nigeria, while Cameroon also raised complaints after losing to host nation Morocco.
Speaking ahead of Morocco’s semi-final clash with Nigeria, Regragui dismissed claims of bias, stressing that refereeing debates exist in football across the world.
“It’s unfortunate that we always talk about refereeing, but controversy exists everywhere. Everyone is doing their best,” he said.
Regragui urged teams to focus on performance rather than officiating, as AFCON 2025 heads into its decisive stages.
