1978 AFCON champion Mohammed Polo has launched a fierce critique of the Ghana Premier League, insisting the competition has suffered a dramatic decline in quality.
After watching the latest Super Clash between Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Stadium, Polo admitted he was left disappointed by what he saw.
“The quality of the Ghana Premier League has gone down drastically,” he said on Connect FM.
“I watched the Super Clash the other time and didn’t enjoy it because the players weren’t good enough.”
In a statement sure to spark nationwide debate, Polo singled out only one locally-based player as worthy of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup — Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.
“Apart from Benjamin Asare, no Ghana Premier League player is quality enough to be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” he declared.
He further pointed to Kotoko’s inability to capitalise even after Hearts were reduced to ten men.
“Despite the red card to Hearts of Oak in the game, Asante Kotoko couldn’t create anything significant — and all went down to quality.”
With Black Stars head coach Otto Addo set to name his final squad on June 1, Polo’s comments have poured fuel on an already sensitive conversation about the state of Ghanaian football.
