Medeama SC board chairman Dr Tony Aubynn has opened up on why several Ghana Premier League clubs shy away from qualifying for African club competitions.
According to him, while continental football should represent ambition and progress, the financial demands often outweigh the perceived benefits for many clubs.
“A good Premier League club must always aim at the top. You can’t be in the Premier League for nothing,” Aubynn said while speaking on Football Made in Ghana on Citi Sports.
He admitted, however, that he understands clubs that prefer to avoid Africa altogether.
“Sometimes I hear people say they don’t want to go to Africa and just want to stay in the Premier League. That loses the essence but I also understand them.”
Medeama, who reached the CAF Champions League group stage for the first time in the 2023/24 season, have firsthand experience of the realities involved.
“When you qualify to go to Africa, the cost will run away,” Aubynn explained, adding that the financial returns are often uncertain.
“We always talk about going to the money zone, but even in the so-called money zone, what you get is not always clear, especially when you consider the cost of the preliminary rounds.”
The comments come amid growing conversations about how Ghanaian clubs can be better supported financially to compete consistently on the continental stage.
