Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare is to be rewarded with a brand-new car after being named the Best Domestic Player in Ghana’s Black Stars squad.

The prize, valued at $38,000, was announced by Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku at the GFA’s 32nd Ordinary Congress on Thursday. The event took place at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, with Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams present.

Asare’s award recognises his performances for Ghana, particularly during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars progressed to the knockout stage.

The 33-year-old was the only player from the Ghana Premier League selected for Ghana’s World Cup squad. He played in three of the team’s four matches during the tournament and kept a clean sheet against England, who went on to claim the bronze medal.

His performances have established Asare as Ghana’s leading domestic-based goalkeeper and earned him the formal recognition from the GFA. The reward will be presented in the form of a new car, with the overall prize package carrying a stated value of $38,000.

The announcement also underlines Asare’s importance to both the national team and Accra Hearts of Oak. He is expected to continue as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper when the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season begins.

Asare previously played for Great Olympics before joining Hearts of Oak. His continued presence between the posts is expected to provide the club with an experienced option as it prepares for the new domestic campaign.

The award was confirmed at the GFA’s annual congress, where Okraku presented the decision in front of representatives of Ghana’s football administration and the country’s Sports and Recreation Minister.

Asare’s selection came after a World Cup campaign in which Ghana reached the knockout phase. He featured in most of the Black Stars’ matches and recorded one of the team’s notable defensive results by denying England a goal.

With three appearances at the tournament, he was central to Ghana’s run beyond the group stage. His selection as the Black Stars’ Best Domestic Player reflects his status as the only Ghana Premier League footballer in the World Cup squad and the contribution he made on the international stage.

He is now set to return to club football with Hearts of Oak, where he is expected to retain the number-one position for the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.
