The Ghana Football Association (GFA) will provide US$200,000 over the next four years to support the healthcare needs of former Ghana national team players.

GFA president Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku announced the initiative during the 32nd Ordinary Session of the GFA Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.

The GFA Foundation Player Welfare Initiative will allocate US$50,000 each year for the next four years, creating a dedicated fund for former national team players facing medical challenges.

The programme represents a direct commitment of US$200,000 in total and is intended to provide assistance to eligible former national stars whose healthcare needs continue after the end of their playing careers.

President Simeon-Okraku said the initiative was designed to recognise the contribution made by former internationals, many of whom represented Ghana with dedication and sacrifice.

“Our former national team players brought immense pride and glory to Ghana through their dedication, sacrifice and service to the nation,” he said.

“Many of them continue to face significant health challenges long after their playing careers have ended, and it is only fitting that the football family stands with them during these difficult moments.”

Under the plan, the GFA Foundation will reserve US$50,000 annually for healthcare support. The annual allocation will be maintained for four years, bringing the value of the welfare initiative to US$200,000.

The announcement makes the fund one of the GFA’s significant direct interventions aimed at supporting former Ghana national team players.

Simeon-Okraku said the scheme reflected the football family’s responsibility to players who had served the nation through their involvement with the national teams.

The initiative focuses specifically on healthcare needs and is intended to assist former national team players dealing with medical challenges after their playing careers have ended.

Its unveiling at the GFA Congress places the welfare of former national stars among the issues addressed by the country’s football governing body. The annual funding mechanism will operate through the GFA Foundation and continue across the four-year period announced by the GFA president.

By committing US$50,000 each year, the GFA will provide a total of US$200,000 in support for the initiative. The move is intended to ensure that former players who brought pride to Ghana through their service are not left without assistance when confronting significant health problems.

The announcement was made as part of the proceedings of the 32nd Ordinary Session of the GFA Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
