Ghana international Tariq Lamptey has returned to competitive football after a 335-day wait, coming off the bench for Queens Park Rangers in their draw with Bolton Wanderers.
The 25-year-old full-back made his first official appearance since suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, which kept him out of action for almost a year and prematurely brought his spell with Italian club Fiorentina to an end.
Lamptey entered the game as a second-half substitute, completing the long-awaited first step in his comeback. His appearance marks a significant moment for the defender, who had been sidelined while recovering from the injury and completing his rehabilitation.
He joined Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers as a free agent during the summer transfer window after finishing that rehabilitation programme. His return provides a major boost to both the London club and Ghana, with Lamptey now able to begin rebuilding his match fitness in competitive football.
The former Black Stars defender will be aiming to develop his sharpness and recover the form that previously established him as one of Ghana’s most exciting full-backs. His pace and attacking qualities had made him an important figure before the lengthy injury setback interrupted his progress.
For Queens Park Rangers, Lamptey’s return offers an additional option at full-back as he works towards becoming fully fit. For Ghana, his comeback will be watched closely by supporters hoping to see him re-establish himself at club level before pushing for a return to the Black Stars set-up.
The appearance against Bolton Wanderers was his first official outing since the injury, ending a period of 335 days away from competitive action. While the substitute role represented only the opening stage of his return, it allowed Lamptey to resume playing and begin the process of regaining his fitness.
Lamptey will now hope to build on the QPR debut and continue his recovery without interruption. His immediate focus will be on reaching full match fitness, while the wider ambition will be to rediscover the level that made him a prominent prospect for Ghana before his time on the sidelines.
His return is expected to be warmly received by Ghana supporters, who will be eager to see whether the defender can re-establish himself for club and country after overcoming the serious ACL injury.
