Report claims Eto’o influenced Aboubakar’s AFCON omission to protect goal record

Cameroonian football is buzzing with controversy after reports suggested FECAFOOT president Samuel Eto’o played a role in Vincent Aboubakar’s exclusion from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations squad.

Despite being in strong form for Azerbaijani side Neftchi PFK, the 33-year-old striker was left out of Cameroon’s final list for the tournament, which kicks off on December 21 in Morocco. His omission has raised eyebrows across the football community.

According to The Sun, Eto’o allegedly influenced the decision to drop Aboubakar due to fears that the forward could surpass his long-standing national team scoring record.
Aboubakar sits on 45 goals in 117 matches, just 11 short of Eto’o’s record of 56 goals in 118 appearances.

The report claims the former Barcelona and Chelsea star is keen to preserve his all-time scoring mark, leading to Aboubakar’s absence from Marc Brys’ squad for the continental showpiece.

Cameroon have been drawn in Group F alongside Gabon, Ivory Coast and Mozambique, and will open their campaign on Wednesday, December 24.
