Ghana surge up FIFA rankings after World Cup breakthrough

Ghana have made one of the biggest jumps in the latest FIFA world rankings, soaring eight places to 65th following a revitalising 2026 World Cup campaign that has reshaped perceptions of the Black Stars on the global stage.

The four-time African champions recorded the second-largest rise of any nation in the newly released list, with only Norway climbing higher after a 12-place leap. The upgrade caps a tournament that many in Ghana see as a turning point under Portuguese head coach Carlos Queiroz.

The new position also lifts Ghana to 14th in Africa, bolstering their status ahead of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and signalling renewed competitiveness after a turbulent spell in recent years.

World Cup run restores belief

Drawn in a daunting Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama, Ghana were widely tipped to struggle in North America. Instead, they battled their way into the knockout phase and emerged with credit from every match.

They opened their campaign with a gritty win over Panama, setting a positive tone for the tournament. That was followed by a highly disciplined defensive performance in Boston, where they held European giants England to a goalless draw.

A narrow defeat to Croatia in their final group fixture briefly threatened to derail their progress, but results elsewhere meant the Black Stars advanced to the Round of 32 as one of the World Cup’s best third-placed teams.

Their journey ended in the first knockout round against Colombia, yet the slim margin of defeat did little to overshadow what many observers viewed as one of the most resilient and tactically mature campaigns Ghana have produced at a major finals.

Throughout the tournament, the side’s organisation, work-rate and refusal to concede ground against more fancied opponents drew widespread praise from supporters and analysts.

Queiroz effect and emerging talent

Since assuming control earlier this year, Carlos Queiroz has been credited with instilling structure and competitive edge in a squad that had appeared short of confidence.

Under his guidance, Ghana managed to go toe-to-toe with some of the world’s most established football nations. His tactical plans – founded on compact defending, rapid transitions and collective discipline – have been highlighted as key factors in the Black Stars’ resurgence.

The eight-place rise in the rankings is Ghana’s most significant improvement in recent years and is being viewed as a concrete indicator of progress.

It also underlines the growing impact of a new generation of players who took their opportunity to impress on the global stage, while senior squad members provided vital leadership in tense moments.

Eyes now on Africa and beyond

Although the Black Stars remain outside the continent’s top tier for now, the rankings shift suggests they are edging back towards Africa’s elite.

The climb to 14th in Africa strengthens Ghana’s hand going into the 2027 AFCON qualification campaign, where seeding and recent form can influence the difficulty of the path to the finals.

Officials and fans alike acknowledge that substantial work remains if Ghana are to become consistent challengers both in Africa and at future World Cups. However, the combination of improved results, clearer tactical identity and rising confidence has generated a sense of momentum.

With belief restored after a memorable World Cup run, Ghana’s focus now turns to upcoming international fixtures, where the Black Stars will aim to build on recent gains and keep ascending both the global and African rankings.
