Black Stars defender Alexander Djiku says he has “no plans to stop” playing for Ghana despite the heartbreak of missing the 2026 World Cup through injury, insisting he remains hungry, fit and committed to leading a new generation of national team players.

The 31-year-old centre-back, one of Ghana’s most trusted defenders in recent years, was ruled out of the tournament at the last moment after sustaining an injury, forcing coaches to replace him with Derrick Luckassen.

Djiku’s absence denied him a chance to feature on football’s biggest stage, but he has now moved to reassure supporters that his international career is far from over.

“I don’t know, I try to give the best of me and show them what I can do, but maybe one time I will not be like I am now, and it will be the moment to stop. But for now I feel very good, I feel happy. I try to give my experience for the young people who are coming, and then we will see year by year, competition after competition,” he said.

Injury blow fuels fresh determination

Missing the World Cup was a major personal setback for Djiku, who has become a cornerstone of the Black Stars’ defence.

The late injury meant he was withdrawn from Ghana’s final squad, watching from the sidelines as the team competed without him at a time when his authority and experience would have been crucial.

Rather than dwell on the disappointment, Djiku has channelled his focus towards full recovery and a return to peak form. He has also underlined his desire to continue offering leadership in a squad undergoing transition after the 2026 tournament.

Despite speculation that the defender might consider drawing the curtain on his international career after such a blow, he has stated clearly that retirement is not under consideration.

Focus on guiding a new generation

Djiku stressed that his current priority is to sustain high performance levels and help integrate younger players into the Black Stars set-up.

He believes his years at the top level, as well as his composure in high-pressure international fixtures, can provide a foundation for emerging talents as Ghana rebuilds.

His stance is likely to be welcomed by fans and technical staff alike. At a time when the national side is seeking consistency and leadership, Djiku’s continued presence offers rare stability.

Coaches value his positional intelligence, calmness under pressure and communication at the back, qualities that have made him one of Ghana’s most reliable performers in recent campaigns.

Key role in Ghana’s next chapter

As the Black Stars prepare for upcoming challenges, including qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Djiku’s influence is expected to remain significant both on and off the pitch.

He acknowledges that every footballer’s career has a natural endpoint, but maintains that his focus is on the immediate tasks ahead rather than any long-term exit.

By taking matters “year by year, competition after competition”, Djiku is framing the next phase of his career as an opportunity to make the most of his remaining years at the top while mentoring those who will eventually replace him.

For Ghana supporters, his renewed commitment offers reassurance at a pivotal moment. With a blend of emerging prospects and seasoned figures such as Djiku, the Black Stars will hope that continuity in leadership can underpin a more successful era in the seasons to come.
