Ghana step up preparations for Nigeria clash at WAFU B U-20 Championship

Ghana’s U-20 side, the Black Satellites, have intensified their build-up for a high-stakes opening showdown against Nigeria as the countdown continues to the WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire.

Head coach Maxwell Konadu put his players through a demanding session at the University of Ghana Stadium Annex B on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, as his staff worked on refining tactics and improving sharpness ahead of the regional tournament.

Ghana have been drawn in a daunting Group B alongside long-time rivals Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Togo – a section widely tipped to deliver some of the competition’s most fiercely fought encounters.

The WAFU B tournament will act as the qualifying route to the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, which Ghana is scheduled to host.

Nigeria test looms in group opener

The Black Satellites begin their campaign with a marquee fixture against Nigeria on Monday, 27 July, at the Lycee Scientifique Stadium in Yamoussoukro. Kick-off is at 14:00 GMT (14:00 local time).

The meeting between the two West African heavyweights is expected to set the tone for Group B, with both nations traditionally strong at youth level and eager to seize early control in the race for qualification.

Konadu’s men will have just three days to recover before facing Burkina Faso on Thursday, 30 July, at 18:00 GMT, also in Yamoussoukro.

Ghana then complete the group phase against Togo on Sunday, 2 August, at the Stade CKB, with that match also scheduled for a 14:00 GMT kick-off.

Regional showcase of young talent

This edition of the WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship will bring together seven member associations from across the sub-region, offering a key stage for some of West Africa’s most promising young footballers.

Beyond regional bragging rights, the competition carries significant weight as the official qualifying tournament for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. With Ghana confirmed as hosts of that continental finals, the Black Satellites will be under pressure to demonstrate that a new generation is capable of competing at the highest level on home soil.

Konadu and his backroom team are using the current training camp to assess form, build cohesion and instil a clear tactical identity before the squad departs for Cote d’Ivoire.

Ghana eye return to youth prominence

Ghana’s U-20 side has a proud history in African and world youth tournaments, and the upcoming WAFU B Championship is being viewed within the Ghana Football Association as an important step in restoring that pedigree.

The combination of a challenging group, a grudge match against Nigeria and the added dimension of preparing for a home AFCON in 2027 means the Black Satellites’ progress in Yamoussoukro will be closely watched both locally and across the region.
