Ghanaian rising star Joanita Borteye will represent her country at the 2026 ITTF African Championships in Tangier, Morocco, as she takes another step in her development at senior international level.
The tournament runs from October 18 to 25, with Borteye securing her place through the ITTF World Rankings. She will face some of the continent’s leading players as she seeks to build on her growing experience.
Borteye made her senior African Championships debut at the 2025 edition in Tunis, Tunisia. That appearance gave her valuable insight into the demands of competing at the highest level on the continent and will serve as an important reference as she returns to the event.
The teenager has also established herself as one of Ghana’s promising players through a series of notable performances in youth and domestic competitions.
In July 2026, Borteye partnered Israel Aklie to win the U15 mixed doubles title at the ITTF-Africa Youth Championships in Accra. Their victory against Tunisia in the final delivered Ghana’s first gold medal at a major African table tennis championship since 1987.
She followed that achievement with a strong showing at the Damba Table Tennis Championship in May 2026. Borteye won both the Under-19 Girls Singles and senior Women’s Singles titles, beating Cynthia Kwabi in the senior Women’s final.
Those results have strengthened her credentials ahead of the trip to Tangier, where she will measure her progress against established senior opposition. The competition will also give her the opportunity to gain further experience in the demanding continental environment.
Borteye’s qualification through the ITTF World Rankings reflects her continued rise, while her previous appearance at the senior African Championships means she will return with a clearer understanding of the standard required.
Her immediate target will be to produce a strong performance in Morocco, but the event also forms part of her longer-term progression as she continues moving from youth competition into the senior ranks.
