Ghanaian table tennis official Eric Addo has been selected by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) to officiate at the 2026 African Championships in Tangier, Morocco.
The tournament will be held from 18 to 25 October and will give Addo the chance to move closer to achieving Blue Badge status, an internationally recognised qualification for table tennis umpires.
Addo said the appointment represented an important milestone in his officiating career, particularly because selection for the continental championship is not available to every umpire.
“It means a lot to me because this is one of the highest competitions in Africa, and not all umpires will have the opportunity to be called,” he said.
His assignment will also serve as a key assessment opportunity in his pursuit of the Blue Badge. An ITTF representative will assess his performance during the championship as part of the process towards obtaining the qualification.
Addo said he was working hard to ensure he was fully prepared for the event.
“I am preparing very well because in this competition I will be evaluated by an ITTF person before I can obtain my Blue Badge,” he said.
The Ghanaian official expressed gratitude to God for the opportunities he had received and thanked the Ghana Revenue Authority, particularly the Customs Division, for allowing him to travel for officiating assignments.
He also recognised the support of the Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), its president, Mr. Mawuko Afadzinu, and those who had encouraged him through their prayers and support.
Addo’s selection strengthens Ghana’s representation among the officials at the 2026 African Championships. The event will provide him with an opportunity to display his abilities at one of the continent’s leading table tennis competitions while undergoing assessment for the Blue Badge.
