French football icon Zinedine Zidane has agreed a contract to take charge of the France national team until June 2030, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.
Romano made the claim in a post on Facebook on Tuesday, saying the former Real Madrid boss will be officially presented as Les Bleus’ new head coach in the coming days.
“Zinedine Zidane has signed as the new France coach until June 2030. The story has been confirmed as Zizou will be unveiled as the new head coach in the next days back to work with France,” Romano wrote.
The French Football Federation has not yet issued a formal statement, but Romano’s report has intensified speculation that Zidane is finally set to step into a role he has long been linked with.
Long-term mandate through to 2030 World Cup
Under the reported agreement, Zidane would oversee France through a crucial four-year cycle of major competitions.
He is expected to lead the team in the 2027 UEFA Nations League, Euro 2028 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, giving him a long runway to shape a new era for one of international football’s strongest squads.
A deal running to June 2030 would span an entire World Cup qualifying campaign and tournament, suggesting a long-term project aimed at maintaining France’s status as a global powerhouse and transitioning to a new generation of players.
Zidane’s first return to management since 2021
If confirmed, the France job would be Zidane’s first coaching role since leaving Real Madrid in 2021 after his second stint in charge of the Spanish club.
The 54-year-old has been out of management for three years, despite being regularly linked with top European sides and the French national team. His availability and stature have fuelled persistent rumours that he was being lined up as a future France coach.
Zidane’s potential appointment would also see him return to the national setup where he enjoyed a glittering playing career, winning the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

Zidane built one of the most impressive managerial resumes in modern club football during his time at Real Madrid.
Between 2016 and 2018, he guided the Spanish giants to three successive UEFA Champions League titles – an unprecedented achievement in the modern era of the competition.
Across his two spells at the Bernabeu, he also claimed two La Liga titles and a collection of other domestic and international trophies, cementing his reputation as a coach capable of handling elite players and delivering success on the biggest stages.
