Ghanaian midfielder Charles McCarthy has joined Romanian Liga 2 side CS Afumati on a free transfer from Modelu.
The 22-year-old central midfielder moves after two seasons with Modelu, strengthening Afumati’s options in the centre of the pitch ahead of the new campaign. The deal is a permanent switch, completed after the expiry of his previous contract.
McCarthy, who stands at 1.68m and is right-footed, is listed primarily as a central midfielder and arrives with experience of Romanian football already on his CV. He previously featured in the Romanian Cup, playing the full 90 minutes in his only recorded appearance in the competition.
Before heading to Romania, McCarthy developed his career in Ghana, featuring for Elmina Sharks before moving to Accra giants Hearts of Oak. He later left Hearts of Oak and spent a spell without a club before securing his opportunity in European football.
McCarthy first joined Modelu on a free transfer in 2024 and has now earned a step up to CS Afumati, who compete in the country’s second tier. His move continues a journey that has taken him from Ghanaian domestic football to a professional platform in Romania.
The transfer, completed on 22 July 2026, confirms McCarthy as a new permanent signing for CS Afumati.
