Yan Diomande made an immediate impression on his Real Madrid debut, completing more dribbles than any other player in the club’s 3-0 friendly win over Schalke despite being on the pitch for only 30 minutes.
The 19-year-old Ivory Coast winger came on in the 61st minute to replace Brahim Diaz and successfully completed three dribbles. His brief appearance underlined the pace, directness and one-on-one ability that Real Madrid identified as major strengths when they signed him from RB Leipzig.
According to Defensa Central, Diomande’s first outing for the Spanish club could hardly have gone better from an individual perspective. While he was not the outstanding player in the match, he offered a clear indication of the attacking role he may be able to play for the club.
Real Madrid completed the transfer for a fee of 125m euros, with a further 15m euros potentially payable in add-ons. The club’s investment was based largely on Diomande’s ability to beat opponents and create danger, qualities he displayed prominently in the Bundesliga last season.
His dribbling statistics were among the most notable in Europe. Diomande recorded a success rate of 56.20%, placing him at the top of a ranking measuring dribbling effectiveness among players in the five major European leagues who attempted the highest number of dribbles last season.
He offered another demonstration of that quality during his half-hour against Schalke. Diomande repeatedly looked to take the ball forward and attack defenders directly, using his speed to advance into the opposition half and contribute to Real Madrid’s late attacking pressure.
Real Madrid controlled the match and produced a particularly strong overall performance, leaving Diomande involved in several attacks during the second half. His introduction came during a period when the side appeared capable of adding to its goals, and he became part of an attacking group that continued to threaten Schalke.
The winger also showed promising understanding with Carlos Espi, who scored Real Madrid’s second goal. He combined effectively with Vinicius Junior and operated alongside Jude Bellingham, whose influence and leadership within the dressing room continue to grow.
Although Diomande had only a limited amount of time to make his mark, he played with confidence and adapted smoothly to the demands of his first appearance. His performance suggested that he can provide Real Madrid with a rapid, aggressive option in individual duels, while also possessing the ability to create scoring opportunities and find the net himself.
The match therefore offered an early glimpse of why Real Madrid were prepared to pay a substantial fee for the Ivorian. Three successful dribbles in 30 minutes did not tell the whole story of his debut, but they reinforced the qualities that made him one of the most dangerous and effective dribblers in the Bundesliga last season.
