Ghana U-20 head coach Desmond Ofei is hopeful that forward Jerry Afriyie will return to the squad after rejoining his club, CD Lugo, during the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Ghana Football Association had a pre-agreement with the Spanish side for the striker to be released for the first two group matches.
Afriyie featured in the opener against DR Congo and later provided a crucial assist for Emmanuel Mensah’s winner in the 1-0 victory over defending champions Senegal.
“Jerry Afriyie is a true leader both on and off the field,” Ofei said.
“He’s a fantastic talent and would be difficult to have him for the whole tournament. Fortunately, we had him for two matches.”
“We’ll try our best to bring him back at the right time. Hopefully, he won’t be away for long—we expect him back soon, and in his absence, we’ll continue to make him proud.”
Ghana face Central Africa Republic in the group stage final clash with a draw proving enough to seal a quarterfinal spot.
