Ghana deputy captain Thomas Partey has completed his move to Saudi Pro League club Al Shabab, beginning a new chapter in his career after ending his time in Spain.
The 33-year-old midfielder arrived in Riyadh early on Monday to complete the final formalities of the transfer. He joins Al Shabab as a free agent after his contract with Villarreal expired at the end of the 2025/26 season.
Partey spent only one campaign with the Spanish club, making 25 appearances in all competitions. His move to Saudi Arabia represents the latest stage of a career that has taken him through some of Europe’s leading leagues.
The Ghana international first established his reputation at Atletico Madrid before joining Arsenal. During his time with the North London club, Partey became an important presence in midfield, combining physical strength with tactical understanding, passing ability and considerable experience.
He made 130 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions and scored nine goals before departing in 2025. Partey subsequently joined Villarreal on a free transfer and featured regularly during his sole season with the club.
His arrival gives Al Shabab a midfielder with extensive experience at club and international level. The Saudi Pro League has recruited a number of established players from around the world in recent seasons, and Partey is expected to bring additional quality and leadership to the Al Shabab midfield.
Partey continues to play an influential role for the Black Stars. He represented Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, appearing in three matches as the national side reached the Round of 32.
His move to Al Shabab will also give him the opportunity to continue playing competitive football ahead of Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The qualifiers are scheduled to begin in September.
Ghana will be seeking a return to the tournament after failing to qualify for the previous edition. Partey’s leadership and experience could be important as the Black Stars attempt to secure their place in the competition.
The midfielder will now aim to maintain his fitness and form in Saudi Arabia while continuing to contribute to the Ghana national team. As one of the squad’s senior figures, his experience remains a valuable asset for the Black Stars.
Partey’s move marks the end of his spell in Spain and adds another major league to a club career that has already included significant periods in La Liga and the Premier League. At Al Shabab, he will begin his next challenge with the chance to remain a regular at club level while preparing for Ghana’s international commitments.
