Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says his side must demonstrate greater ambition and desire if they are to retain the English Premier League title in the 2026-27 campaign.
The Gunners begin the new season as defending champions after winning the league for the first time in 22 years. Their title defence starts at home against newly promoted Coventry City on Friday, 21 August, with kick-off at 19:00 GMT at Emirates Stadium.
Arteta said he was excited by the prospect of competing in the new Premier League season, but stressed that Arsenal would need to maintain the standards required to challenge successfully again.
The north London club have already made a winning start to the new campaign, beating Manchester City in the Community Shield, traditionally regarded as the curtain-raiser to the English domestic season.
That result gives Arsenal an early piece of silverware and sets up an opening league fixture in front of their home supporters. However, the main challenge now is to carry the determination shown in the Community Shield into a long title defence.
Coventry City will provide the opposition in Friday’s opening match after gaining promotion to compete in the Premier League this season. Their arrival in the top flight means Arsenal’s first league assignment will be against one of the promoted sides, with the champions beginning their defence at Emirates Stadium.
Speaking to Arsenal’s media team before the opening game, Arteta outlined what he believes his players must produce to retain their crown. His message was centred on the need for increased ambition and a strong desire to repeat last season’s achievement.
Arsenal’s title success ended a 22-year wait for the club to win the league. As champions, they now enter the campaign with the added responsibility of defending that status, rather than pursuing it for the first time in more than two decades.
The opening fixture against Coventry City will therefore mark the formal beginning of Arsenal’s attempt to remain at the top of the English Premier League. The match will also be the first opportunity for Arteta’s team to build on its Community Shield victory over Manchester City.
With the new campaign scheduled to begin at 19:00 GMT on Friday, attention will turn to whether Arsenal can match the ambition and desire their manager has identified as essential. Their first test comes at home, against a Coventry City side returning to the Premier League after promotion.
