Samuel Attah Kumi became the latest Ghana Premier League Goal King after scoring 19 goals for Bibiani Gold Stars in the 2025/26 campaign.
His success extends a scoring tradition that began with Peter Lamptey of Hearts of Oak, the first recorded winner of the award in 1973 after finding the net 26 times.
The Golden Boot has since been claimed by many of Ghana’s leading footballers, including Dan Owusu, Opoku Afriyie, Tony Yeboah, Ishmael Addo and Yaw Annor.
Dan Owusu was the first player to win the award in three successive seasons. The Bofoakwa Tano striker scored 24 goals in 1974, 26 in 1975 and 28 in 1976, establishing one of the earliest prolific scoring runs in the competition.
George Alhassan followed as the 1977 winner, before Real Tamale United forward Muhammed Choo took the honour in 1978 and again in 1982. Asante Kotoko attacker Opoku Afriyie won in 1979 and 1981, while Emmanuel Quarshie claimed the 1980 award for Sekondi Hasaacas.
Anane Kobo was the leading scorer in 1983 and 1984, making it consecutive victories. George Alhassan returned to the top in 1985 with Great Olympics, before Cornerstones striker Tony Yeboah won back-to-back awards in 1986 and 1987.
The late 1980s and 1990s featured another group of influential Ghanaian forwards. Henry Acquah, Muhammed Tijani, Thomas Boakye, Abdul Mumuni, Augustine Arhinful, Laud Oscar, Charles Amoah and Kofi Deblah all formed part of that era of prolific goalscorers.
Ishmael Addo matches Dan Owusu’s record
The turn of the millennium belonged to Hearts of Oak striker Ishmael Addo, who became only the second player after Dan Owusu to win the Goal King award three years in a row.
Addo scored 19 goals in 1999, followed by 21 in 2000 and 22 in 2001. His hat-trick of awards matched the feat achieved by Owusu more than two decades earlier.
The 2000s produced a succession of individual winners, including Bernard Don Bortey, Charles Taylor, Shaibu Yakubu, Prince Tagoe, Emmanuel Clottey, Eric Bekoe and Alex Asamoah.
The 2009/10 award was shared by Bismark Idan and Samuel Affum. Nana Poku, Emmanuel Baffour, Mahatma Otoo, Augustine Okrah, Kofi Owusu and Latif Blessing were among the other players to continue the competition’s tradition of outstanding individual scoring campaigns.
Hans Kwofie won the award in 2017, before the Ghana Premier League was disrupted by the Anas Aremeyaw Anas investigative expose in 2018. The fallout led to the cancellation of the 2018 Ghana Premier League season.
The competition was interrupted again during the 2019/20 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Amankona wins twice for Berekum Chelsea
Following the league’s return, Diawisie Taylor won the 2020/21 Golden Boot with Karela United. Yaw Annor then claimed the prize for Ashanti Gold in 2021/22.
The next winners were Abednego Tetteh, Stephen Amankona and Attah Kumi.
Amankona achieved a rare feat by winning consecutive Golden Boots with Berekum Chelsea in 2023/24 and 2024/25. Attah Kumi then became the latest player to be crowned Goal King after his 19-goal campaign for Bibiani Gold Stars in 2025/26.
