Former Ghana international Richmond Boakye Yiadom says players in the Ghana Premier League should be motivated more by their commitment to their clubs and supporters than by financial reward.
The experienced striker believes representing a club, connecting with its fans and making them proud should carry greater importance than money for footballers competing in the domestic league.
“Playing for the fans matters more than money in Ghana Premier League,” Boakye Yiadom said.
Boakye Yiadom, widely known as “Yiadom”, enjoyed a career that took him to clubs in both Europe and Africa. He began his professional journey with Bechem United before moving abroad and establishing himself on the international stage.
The forward went on to play for a number of prominent European clubs, including Juventus, Genoa CFC, Red Bull Salzburg and Crvena zvezda. He built a reputation for his physical strength, finishing and attacking instinct during a career that also included spells with Roda JC Kerkrade, Latina Calcio 1932 and Lecce.
His most productive period came at Red Bull Salzburg, where he scored over 40 goals across competitions. Those performances helped the club compete successfully in domestic football and in European competitions.
Boakye Yiadom also earned recognition with Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars. He made 19 appearances for his country and scored seven goals, while being included in Ghana squads for major competitions.
After spending several years playing abroad, Boakye Yiadom returned to Ghanaian football. Since then, he has continued to pass on his experience and encourage younger players to place greater value on commitment, loyalty and the bond between clubs and their supporters.
His message comes amid continuing debate over the priorities of players in the Ghana Premier League. Boakye Yiadom believes footballers should understand the significance of representing a club and the responsibility that comes with playing in front of its supporters, rather than viewing matches primarily through the financial benefits they may bring.
For many players in Ghana, appearing in the Premier League is also an opportunity to represent clubs they grew up supporting and to build a lasting connection with their communities. Boakye Yiadom’s comments underline the importance of that sense of identity, as well as the role passion can play in helping players make an impact in the competition.
The former Ghana international’s career, which included experience at clubs such as Juventus, Red Bull Salzburg and Crvena zvezda, gives added weight to his call for younger footballers to value the game and their relationship with supporters. His view is that loyalty, commitment and the desire to make fans proud should remain central to the experience of playing in the Ghana Premier League.
