Nico Williams has showered praise on his elder brother, Inaki Williams, following his appointment as the new captain of Athletic Club ahead of the 2025/26 La Liga season.

The Ghana international takes over the armband from Oscar De Marcos, marking a new leadership chapter for the Basque outfit.

Nico, who recently committed his future to the club with a long-term contract, believes no one is more deserving of the role than his brother.

“We have both always dreamed of this moment, my brother is a reference point for everyone and above all for me,” the 23-year-old said.

“I think he’s the best man to be captain, I’m looking forward to seeing him wearing the armband for a long time,” he added.

Inaki’s leadership over the years have earned him respect both on and off the pitch, and now he steps into the role officially.

The Williams brothers are expected to play a key role as Athletic Club get ready for the new season.
