Former Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has opened up about his time at the club, highlighting the challenges and lessons behind the team’s success during his short but productive stay.
Zito’s tenure with the Kumasi-based side was brief but memorable. Within just 43 days, the experienced tactician guided Kotoko to four trophies, an achievement that quickly captured attention across Ghanaian football.
The feat has been widely praised, considering how long most coaches usually take to win multiple titles with a single club.
Days after stepping down from his role, Zito spoke about the experience in an interview with Akoma FM.
During the conversation, he stressed that managing a football team is never as simple as it appears from the outside, especially when working with a large group of players with different personalities and abilities.
“Sometimes, we need to be patient with coaches because we are working with human beings, each with different attitudes, levels of intelligence, and endurance.
“We had about 30 players, and the challenge was to synchronize them into one cohesive unit. It’s not about the days; it’s not even about a month.”
According to Zito, success in football does not only come from tactics on the pitch. He explained that building a strong team also requires understanding players individually and finding ways to bring them together as a united group.
His comments reflect the complex nature of football management, where coaches must balance discipline, communication and motivation while dealing with players who have different temperaments and expectations.
Zito also advised observers and supporters to approach football discussions with a realistic perspective, particularly when evaluating the work of coaches and the time it takes to build a competitive side.
“If you don’t make peace with reality, you’ll never truly grasp what I’m saying. So, let’s leave it there.”
Following his exit from Kotoko, the veteran coach is now preparing for his next assignment with AshantiGold SC, where he is expected to lead the team in the Division One League as a technical director.
His task will be to help the club fight for promotion back to the top flight while continuing to build on his strong reputation within Ghanaian football.
Meanwhile, Kotoko will shift their focus back to action in the Ghana Premier League as they prepare for their next match against Nations FC.
The Porcupine Warriors currently sit fifth on the league table with 39 points, trailing league leaders Medeama SC by seven points.
