Nationality Switch: “We need answers now” – Otto Addo mounts pressure on Black Stars targets

Black Stars coach, Otto Addo says he expects answers as soon as possible from foreign-born Ghanaian players being courted to switch their international allegiance.

It is public knowledge that the Ghana Football Association (GFA), through the recommendation of the technical handlers of the senior national team, has held talks with their targets as part of efforts in strengthening the 2022 World Cup-bound Stars team.

Some of the players include Athletic Bilbao striker Inaki Williams as well as England-based Eddie Nketiah, Tariq Lamptey and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Ghana had Bristol City striker Antoine Semenyo coming on board for the first time for the June international break while Tariq Lamptey – after rejecting a call-up to the England U-21s – travelled to watch the Black Stars beat Madagascar in an Afcon qualifier at Cape Coast.

And coach Addo is keen on knowing the status of talks with these new targets in order to inform his decisions for the next international window in September.

“It’s an open secret that we have talked to a lot of players and I think latest by next week, we would know who would like to join us.

“Surely, we would have to be very fast now because we have set a limit. If someone wants to join us, he must be ready for the September window, and for that we will need answers now.

“Hopefully, we will know more by next week and we will see if we can get one or two players to try out during the September international break,” the trainer stated in an interview.

Qatar World Cup teams will have extremely limited times to prepare for the tournament as the European season will be in session with some domestic competitions – especially the English Premier League – only taking a break just five days to kick-off of the Mundial.

Ghana will be competing in Group H with Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea at the Qatar 2022 Fifa World Cup.
