Lionel Messi’s rousing words in Argentina’s dressing room before the 2026 World Cup final have been described as “purely tactical” by Alexis Mac Allister’s father, after an edited clip went viral and fuelled rumours of a dressing-room crisis.
Viral clip triggers storm of speculation
A short video, broadcast by ESPN and widely shared on social media, showed Messi addressing his Argentina team-mates ahead of the final against Spain, which La Roja won 1-0 after extra time.
In the clip, the captain is heard saying: “هيا يا شباب، حافظوا على هدويكم. الاهم هو ان تحافظوا على هدويكم” – “Come on boys, stay calm. The important thing is that you stay calm.”
He then adds: “دعونا ننسى كل شيء. دعونا نلعب فقط. دعونا نركز على المباراة يا شباب” – “Let’s forget everything. Let’s just play. Let’s focus on the match, boys.”
Those final phrases, stripped of wider context, prompted some fans and commentators to suggest there had been an internal rift or major off‐field issue before the match.
‘If I was asking questions, imagine everyone else’
Carlos Mac Allister, father of Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister and himself a former player, told Argentine radio – in comments reported by La Nacion – that even he briefly wondered if something serious had happened when he first saw the footage.
“I sent a message to Alexis asking him: ‘What happened in the dressing room? Did something happen?’ If I was already beginning to ask questions, imagine what others must have thought,” he admitted.
But, he said, his son immediately dismissed any idea of a crisis.
According to Carlos, Alexis explained that Messi’s talk was centred on how Argentina should approach the game from a tactical and technical standpoint – and not a reference to any off‐field problems.
‘Purely tactical’ message from captain
Carlos Mac Allister stressed that Messi’s instructions to the squad were about match strategy: keeping possession, moving intelligently, and avoiding panicked play.
He said Messi’s focus was on “كيفية خوض المباراة من الناحية الفنية، والتركيز على التمرير، والتحرك، وتبادل المراكز، وعدم اللجوء الى الكرات الطويلة او فقدان الاستحواذ” – how to play the game from a technical perspective, concentrating on passing, movement, interchanging positions, and steering clear of long balls or cheaply surrendering the ball.
The older Mac Allister argued that by isolating only a few lines of that pre‐match address, the viral clip “فتح الباب امام تاويلات لا اساس لها” – opened the door to baseless interpretations.
He insisted the words were simply part of the routine set of tactical and motivational instructions delivered before kick‐off, and not any hint of tension within the camp.
Spain’s superiority, not Argentina’s tensions
Despite the swirl of theories online, Carlos Mac Allister was adamant that Argentina’s defeat in the final owed nothing to internal problems.
He underlined that Spain were the better side on the night, and that this – not any supposed rupture in the Argentina squad – explained the 1-0 scoreline after extra time.
He said all of the “tango” players had given everything in the match, but had encountered a rival who performed at a higher level in the decisive moments.
In doing so, he called for the focus to shift away from speculation over the dressing room and back onto events on the pitch – and for Messi’s pre‐match words to be understood as they were intended: a captain’s calm, tactical guidance before the biggest game in world football.
