Ghana Premier League champions Medeama SC will begin their 2026/27 CAF Champions League campaign against DR Congo giants TP Mazembe after being drawn together in the preliminary round.
The first leg will be played at the TNA Stadium, with Medeama then travelling to Kinshasa for the return fixture. The team that prevails over the two matches will move into the next round of Africa’s leading club competition.
The draw was held at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) headquarters in Cairo on Thursday, setting up a meeting between two established clubs on the continent.
Medeama earned their place in the competition by reclaiming the Ghana Premier League title. Their success secured the country’s sole qualification place in this season’s CAF Champions League.
TP Mazembe represent a formidable challenge for the Ghanaian champions, who are returning to the competition after their domestic title success. The tie will give Medeama an immediate test against one of Africa’s best-known clubs as they begin their attempt to reach the group stage.
The winners will face either Tunisian club Club Africain or Malian champions Djoliba AC in the second preliminary round. That tie will determine which clubs continue their pursuit of a place in the lucrative group phase.
CAF has set the first legs of the opening preliminary-round ties for 4-6 September, with the return matches scheduled to take place from 11-13 September.
The second preliminary round will follow shortly afterwards. Its first legs are due to be played between 14 and 16 September, while the return fixtures are scheduled for 23-25 September.
Medeama’s route to the group stage therefore begins with a demanding two-match contest against TP Mazembe. They will have the advantage of playing the opening fixture at home before facing the return leg in Kinshasa, where the overall winner will be determined.
A successful campaign would see Medeama progress through another round and move closer to securing a place in the group phase of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League. After winning back the Ghana Premier League crown, the club will now look to make a strong impression on their return to the continental competition.
