Mohamed Salah has joined Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor as a free agent, signing a two-year contract after bringing his outstanding Liverpool career to an end.
The 34-year-old’s move was confirmed by Trabzonspor on Thursday, following the expiry of his Liverpool deal. The Egyptian forward scored 257 goals at Anfield and helped the club win two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.
Trabzonspor announced: “A two-year agreement has been reached with professional footballer Mohamed Salah.”
The club published photographs of Salah wearing the Trabzonspor shirt and signing his contract alongside president Ertugrul Dogan.
Thousands of supporters gathered at the airport in Trabzon on Wednesday to welcome Salah when he arrived in the north-eastern Turkish city. Fireworks and flares were set off during the reception, with Salah joining fans in a chant during his first public appearance as a Trabzonspor player.
The level of interest in the transfer had been clear before his arrival. Trabzonspor’s official social media accounts shared a link to a live tracker showing the progress of Salah’s flight as supporters waited for him to land.
Salah’s first Trabzonspor photographs also revealed an unusual shirt-number choice. Rather than wearing the number 11 shirt that became closely associated with him at Liverpool, or Egypt’s number 10, he wore number 61.
The number refers to Trabzon’s area code, which appears on vehicle number plates in Turkey. It is also widely recognised as a symbol of the city.
Salah had been linked with a move to Turkish rivals Besiktas earlier in the transfer window. Possible transfers to Major League Soccer or Saudi Arabia had also been discussed before he agreed to join Trabzonspor.
Trabzonspor are managed by former Turkey international Fatih Tekke and have several players with experience of international football and the Premier League.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana has returned to the club on loan from Manchester United for a second successive season. Former Premier League players Stefan Savic, Paul Onuachu and John Lundstram are also part of the squad, having all spent time in England’s top flight.
The club finished third in the Turkish top flight last season, securing qualification for the UEFA Europa League. They also won the Turkish Cup.
Salah’s move to Trabzonspor follows his final period at Liverpool, where he established himself as one of the most important players in the club’s modern history. His goals helped Liverpool secure major domestic and European honours during an illustrious spell at Anfield.
The forward also captained Egypt at the 2026 FIFA World Cup during the summer. Egypt reached the round of 16 before being eliminated by Argentina, who went on to finish as runners-up.
