Luxembourg to finish on high note against Lithuania

Sunday evening brings us this final round of matches in League C/Group 1 and features this upcoming clash between Luxembourg and Lithuania with the hosts looking to round off a reasonably successful campaign in the third tier of this season’s Nations League competition with a win at their Stade de Luxembourg.

Although they trail the Group 1 winners, Turkey, by a five point margin with no chance of catching the leaders up, it has nevertheless been an encouraging campaign from Luxembourg’s perspective as they’ve more than held their own in League C with victories over Lithuania and Faroe Islands to show for their efforts.

Both of these wins were away from home as well, and as they now return to home soil for this final group match, Luxembourg will fancy their chances of doing the ‘double’ over their visitors, Lithuania, on Sunday evening.

Despite losing 2-0 earlier in the group phase at home to Turkey, Luxembourg produced an impressive display away at the group winners in midweek, drawing 3-3 and proving they are no longer pushovers on the international stage.

Lithuania have no chance to avoid relegation from League C as they trail second from bottom nation, Faroe Islands, by a four point margin prior to this final group game away from home at Luxembourg which looks like being another tough assignment for the visitors in what has been a disastrous Nations League campaign.

A poor start to this season’s competition saw Lithuania slump to four defeats on the trot, being handed losses by Sunday’s upcoming opponents, Luxembourg, along with home and away defeats to Turkey along with a 2-1 loss at Faroe Islands, while a 1-1 draw with Faroe Islands in midweek provided the visitors with much needed respite.

Overall results though in the Nations League competition have been poor for Lithuania who have managed to register just two wins from their previous 17 games in this format.

They picked up rare wins in the shape of victories over Albania and Kazakhstan, both of which were actually away from home.

However, a total of 12 defeats within this overall sequence of results suggest this upcoming trip to Luxembourg could pose the visitors further problems, especially as they have lost each of the previous three meetings on the trot to their hosts and look powerless to avoid a fourth defeat here.
