Sudan coach Kwesi Appiah has sent a bold message after guiding his team to their first Africa Cup of Nations win in 13 years.
A 74th-minute own goal from Saul Coco sealed a 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, reigniting Sudan’s campaign and putting them firmly on track for the knockout stages.
Speaking after the historic win, Appiah made his ambitions clear.
“I am happy with the win, but our ambition is to win the title, not just achieve a single victory.”
He praised his squad’s experience and resilience in navigating a tricky match.
“We have experienced players, and their performance was strong. We faced some difficulties, but we always try to show good quality in our matches to achieve victories. Thanks to our fans for their support.”
Appiah insisted Sudan are in Morocco to compete, not just participate.
“When you take part in any tournament, the main ambition is to get through the group stage and go as far as possible… We are not here to just participate.”
The victory sets up a decisive final Group E clash against Burkina Faso on December 31, where Sudan need just a point to secure a historic place in the round of 16, turning Appiah’s words into a tangible goal.
