Comoros face must-win clash with Mali to keep AFCON hopes alive

Comoros will take on Mali in a high-stakes Group A showdown at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca on Monday, with both sides still fighting for a place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations knockout stage.

For the Coelacanths, only a victory will keep their qualification hopes alive, depending on the outcome of Morocco vs. Zambia. Comoros, yet to score in the tournament, know time is running out. After opening with a 2-0 loss to hosts Morocco and a goalless draw with Zambia, the island nation face a daunting task under coach Stefano Cusin, who has prioritised defensive structure but now needs attacking efficiency.

“Scoring has been our biggest challenge so far,” a source close to the team noted. “We have the structure, but we must find the final touch against Mali.”

Comoros’ recent record against Mali is bleak, having lost twice 3-0 in the 2025 World Cup qualifiers, underscoring the uphill battle ahead. Across their last six competitive matches, Comoros have scored just seven goals while conceding 14, highlighting their need for a dramatic turnaround.

Comoros v Morocco

Mali, unbeaten in AFCON so far, arrive in Casablanca after two 1-1 draws against Zambia and Morocco, with Lassine Sinayoko converting both penalties. Coach Tom Saintfiet’s side has shown tactical discipline and defensive solidity, conceding just four goals across their last six matches, while demonstrating the cutting edge needed in earlier World Cup qualifiers against Comoros.

A win will secure Mali’s progression to the knockout stage, while Comoros must summon a remarkable performance to rewrite the narrative of their second AFCON appearance.
