The Black Stars of Ghana face a potential blow ahead of the decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with striker Iñaki Williams an injury doubt after limping off for Athletic Club over the weekend.
The 28-year-old was named in Otto Addo’s 24-man squad for the crucial double-header against Central African Republic and Comoros later this month. But his participation now hangs in the balance after he was forced off in the 53rd minute during Athletic Club’s 2-1 La Liga win over RCD Mallorca at San Mamés.
Williams had just ended his goal drought in the match before being replaced by his younger brother, Nico Williams. Athletic manager Ernesto Valverde admitted uncertainty over the Ghanaian’s availability for international duty.
“I don’t know, but imagine he won’t go. I don’t know if they will have to do any tests or what the protocol is, but things are as they are,” Valverde told reporters when asked about Williams’ chances of joining Ghana’s camp.
Athletic Club are yet to confirm the severity of the forward’s injury, leaving the Black Stars sweating on his fitness ahead of their camp in Casablanca, which begins Sunday, October 5.
Ghana will host Central African Republic on October 8 at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknès before travelling to face Comoros four days later in their final round of qualifiers.
