Former Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Philemon McCarthy says players involved in the famous rivalry between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko don’t need any external motivation to rise to the occasion.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Super Clash on November 9, 2025, McCarthy explained that the intensity and emotion attached to Ghana’s biggest club fixture naturally inspire the players to give their all.
“Players don’t need motivation for Kotoko vs Hearts games. The players are always motivated,” McCarthy told ghanasportspage.com.
“They know regular matches attract just over 5,000 fans, but this match, there will be full capacity.”
He believes every player understands the significance of the match and what a poor performance could mean for their reputation.
“They don’t really need motivation. They know what is at stake and know if they flop it will affect their careers.”
McCarthy also shared his thoughts on both teams’ form heading into the game, noting that Hearts of Oak’s national team goalkeeper gives them an edge, while Kotoko’s experience from their recent continental campaign could prove valuable.
“Hearts of Oak has the Black Stars goalie in post which is also a plus for them. Kotoko also played in Africa, although they were eliminated, it will fuel them,” he added.
The Phobians are unbeaten in eight matches this season and are determined to stretch that impressive run.
Kotoko are also undefeated and have won three of their last four meetings with Hearts.
