Giroud transfer: LAFC ahead of other MLS clubs

Transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has provided some further insight into interest in AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud as he looks to be edging closer towards joining MLS side LAFC.

The experienced France international remains a key player for Milan, as well as for his national side, despite being set to turn 38 later this year, and one imagines he could’ve done a job for another European club.

Still, Giroud seems to be leaning towards LAFC after a formal approach, according to Romano, who has also added that clubs from the United Arab Emirates and other MLS sides have been among the teams to show an interest in the former Arsenal and Chelsea striker.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for the latest edition of his Daily Briefing column, Romano said: “Another player heading to the MLS looks to be Olivier Giroud. It’s not done yet, but LAFC are pushing and they are the favourites.

“Giroud also had some approaches from UAE, some approaches from other MLS clubs and also some calls from Saudi. But LAFC sent a formal proposal, they are pushing and it’s up to Giroud now as this decision is also involving his family.

“Hugo Lloris is also at LAFC and is pushing for his old friend and France international colleague to join him at the MLS club, so let’s see what happens.”

Giroud transfer: French striker nearing end to great career in Europe

Although Giroud has never exactly been the very finest striker in world football, he can certainly look back on a great career in Europe.

Something of a late bloomer, it was only in his mid-20s that Giroud moved from Montpellier to Arsenal, where he really established himself at the highest level, scoring 105 goals for the Gunners and winning three FA Cups during his time at the Emirates Stadium.

Giroud also shone at Chelsea, winning the Champions League and Europa League, while he’s also earned a reputation for scoring some stunning goals, including a memorable ‘scorpion kick’ for Arsenal against Crystal Palace.

The 37-year-old is also a World Cup winner with France, and a Serie A champion with Milan.
