Ghana’s Black Queens will begin their bid to return to the FIFA Women’s World Cup against Ecuador in the opening match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Play-Off Tournament.

The six-team tournament will be held from 24 November to 5 December, with only two places available in the final phase of the qualification process. That leaves Ghana with very little margin for error as they attempt to progress through a demanding route to the global finals.

After facing Ecuador, Ghana will play a second group fixture against either Uzbekistan or Chinese Taipei. Their group campaign will then conclude with a meeting against Papua New Guinea.

The schedule is:

– Matchday 1: Ghana v Ecuador
– Matchday 2: Ghana v Uzbekistan or Chinese Taipei
– Matchday 3: Papua New Guinea v Ghana

The Black Queens earned their place in the play-off tournament by beating Cote d’Ivoire 2-1 in the WAFCON 2026 play-in round. That result revived Ghana’s hopes of reaching the World Cup after they were eliminated by Malawi in the quarter-finals.

Ghana must finish among the top two teams in their group to reach the final phase. With just two qualification places at stake across the six-team tournament, each result will carry considerable importance and the opening game against Ecuador could immediately shape the contest.

A win would give the Black Queens an early advantage and provide momentum before their remaining fixtures. However, a defeat would place additional pressure on their next two matches and make the margin for further mistakes even smaller.

The final group game against Papua New Guinea may also become decisive, depending on the results recorded in the earlier matches. Ghana’s players and coaching staff will therefore need to manage the campaign carefully, with points, goal difference and individual performances potentially proving crucial.

Reaching the final phase would not guarantee qualification for the World Cup. Ghana would then face another major test, with a single knockout match set to decide who secures a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Victory in that decisive encounter would send the Black Queens back to the world’s biggest women’s football tournament for the first time since 2007. Ghana have been absent from the competition for two decades, making this play-off campaign an important opportunity to end a long wait.

The immediate focus, though, will be on Ecuador. A strong start could give Ghana a platform from which to negotiate the rest of the tournament, while a poor result would make the path to qualification considerably more difficult.

The Black Queens now face a high-pressure series of matches in which every point and goal could influence their hopes. Their journey towards the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup begins against Ecuador, with Ghana seeking to turn their place in the play-offs into a long-awaited return to the international stage.
