Ghana target Los Angeles 2028 after ‘outstanding’ Glasgow Commonwealth Games

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) Ghana have described Team Ghana’s Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign as an “outstanding” success, despite the country finishing with only two medals.

The organisations said the performances in Glasgow had created a strong platform for further progress at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. In a statement released at the conclusion of the Games in Glasgow yesterday, they argued that the team’s contribution should not be judged only by its position on the medal table.

Instead, the GOC/CGA said the athletes’ quality, resilience and determination were equally important, particularly given the strength of the opposition they faced from across the Commonwealth.

Ghana’s two medals came in athletics and boxing. Zinabu Issah won a historic silver medal in the Women’s F57 Shot Put, while Amadu Mohammed secured bronze in the men’s 55kg boxing competition.

The committee said Ghanaian competitors had repeatedly shown discipline, courage and commitment while taking on world-class opposition throughout the Games.

Among the performances singled out for praise was that of Ghana’s men’s 4×100 metres relay team. Joseph Paul Amoah, Mustapha Bokpin, Saminu Rashid-Abdul and Benjamin Azamati were commended for combining speed and teamwork in a display that attracted widespread admiration, despite the team narrowly missing out on a medal.

The GOC/CGA also praised the wider delegation, which comprised 40 athletes competing in athletics, para athletics, boxing, cycling, judo, swimming, para swimming, para powerlifting and weightlifting.

Although the Games ended with two medals, the committee said every member of Team Ghana had represented the country with distinction. It described the wider value of the campaign as extending beyond the final medal count, pointing to the unity, resilience and fighting spirit shown by the team.

“The experience gained in Glasgow will serve as a strong foundation for even greater achievements. Our focus now shifts to preparing Team Ghana, together with our emerging talents, for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games through improved preparation, targeted athlete development and stronger support systems,” the statement said.

The next phase will therefore focus on building on the lessons from Glasgow, with the GOC/CGA highlighting improved preparation, targeted development of athletes and stronger support structures as priorities ahead of Los Angeles 2028.

The organisations thanked the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, for its support. They also acknowledged the contribution of corporate partners, including GCB Bank PLC, the EEZZY Group Foundation and the Ghana Sports Fund.

Coaches, technical officials, medical personnel and team management were also recognised, along with the media, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and the Ghanaian community in Scotland.

The GOC congratulated all of Ghana’s athletes and officials, reiterating that the achievements of Glasgow 2026 should be understood in the context of the team’s collective effort rather than medals alone. It said the campaign reflected the qualities that continue to define Ghanaian sport and offered a foundation on which the country can build towards the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
