Ghana striker Kwesi Appiah aiming to shine for Reading in loan deal

Reading have managed to secure the services of Kwesi Appiah on loan until the end of the season.

Having recently been rewarded a new contract at his parent club Crystal Palace, several clubs were looking to sign the Ghanaian international but Reading have won the race for his signature.

A striker who likes to play on the shoulder of the defence, Appiah has proven himself at both Conference and League 2 level. In the Conference with Cambridge United, the diminutive striker scored an impressive 10 goals in just 14 games. Following this prolific stint, AFC Wimbledon gave Appiah a chance to prove himself in League 2 and he duly delivered, netting three times in seven games.

However, it was in the African Cup of Nations where the Palace forward really made a name for himself. Scoring his first international goal in the quarter-final against Guinea, Appiah was then instrumental in Ghana’s Semi-final victory over Equatorial Guinea. After winning the penalty which led to the opening goal, Appiah then provided the assist for the third and final goal.

Reading manager Steve Clarke was keen to express his relief at fending off other clubs to sign Appiah, and said: “When the opportunity arose to bring Kwesi here until the end of the season, I felt it was the right thing to do.”

With the Royals currently sitting 19th in the table, Appiah will be hoping his goals can help them move up the league.
