Ghana’s Black Satellites will play their final warm-up match against Division One League side Semper Fi on Thursday, as they step up preparations for the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship in Cote d’Ivoire.
The friendly will be staged at the Accra Sports Stadium on 23 July 2026, with kick-off scheduled for 14:00 local time, and will act as the last audition for players hoping to make the final squad.
Last hurdle before Cote d’Ivoire
Head coach Maxwell Konadu will use the match to make key selection and tactical decisions before the team departs for Yamoussoukro, where the regional tournament will be held.
After several weeks of intensive training, Konadu and his backroom staff are entering the closing stages of their preparation phase. The focus has now shifted from fitness and conditioning to tactical cohesion, game management and building on-field understanding between players.
The squad continued its build-up on Wednesday with a demanding session at the University of Ghana Stadium Annex B. Coaches placed particular emphasis on tactical shape, pressing, transitions and set-piece routines, while also maintaining the physical edge required for tournament football.
Thursday’s clash with Semper Fi is expected to mirror competitive conditions as closely as possible, giving the technical team a final opportunity to observe how players respond under match pressure before trimming the squad.
Selection decisions looming
The outcome of the friendly is likely to influence the final list of players who will travel to Cote d’Ivoire. Konadu and his assistants will be monitoring performances closely, looking at positional discipline, decision-making and how individuals fit into the collective system.
For fringe players, the game could represent a last chance to force their way into contention. For established squad members, it is an opportunity to cement starting places and build momentum heading into the competition.
The coaching staff are also expected to test different player combinations and possible formations, with an eye on the varied tactical approaches they will encounter in Group B.
Tough group for Ghana in WAFU B U-20 Championship
Ghana have been drawn in a demanding Group B, opening their campaign against arch-rivals Nigeria in a highly anticipated fixture. They will then face Burkina Faso and Togo in what is widely regarded as one of the most challenging groups in the tournament.
The WAFU B U-20 Championship serves as the qualifying route for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament Ghana will host. Strong performances in Yamoussoukro will therefore be crucial, not only for regional bragging rights but also for securing a place at the continental showpiece on home soil.
With the stakes raised by the prospect of playing a major youth tournament in front of their own supporters in 2027, the Black Satellites’ preparations have taken on added significance.

The Ghana Football Association views the WAFU B campaign as a key step in building a competitive squad capable of shining at the U-20 AFCON on home ground.
