Following Ghana’s 2-0 loss to Sudan in their AFCON qualifier, Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has emphasized the importance of tactical discipline in difficult moments.
Reflecting on the defeat, Addo shared his belief that the team needs to stay focused on their strategy, even when matches don’t go as planned.
“When things go wrong, we have to stick to the plan,” Addo said in his post-match interview. “Not all of a sudden play long balls or do something completely different. The plan is one we developed together, and if everyone sticks to it, we have a better chance of succeeding.”
Addo explained that deviating from the game plan can lead to disorganization on the pitch, making it harder to recover from setbacks.
The coach also urged his players to trust in their ability to execute the tactics that have been set for them, stating that only through collective discipline can the team improve.
“It’s a mind game, knowing your own strength but also being conscious of the team’s togetherness. Sticking to the plan means that I’m not doing my own thing. Maybe I’m mad that we’re two goals behind, but I stick to the plan and listen,” he added.
The coach’s call for tactical discipline came after Ghana’s struggles in front of goal against Sudan, where the team missed several key chances.
Addo believes that with more mental fortitude and trust in their game plan, the Black Stars can turn things around in their upcoming matches.
