Everton: Myers delivers Brereton Diaz blow

Everton have been strongly linked with a move for Ben Brereton Diaz this summer, and after a late attempt to sign the player this evening a reliable source has given an update on the player’s future.

What’s the latest?

According to Sky Sports news editor and Everton insider Alan Myers, the Blackburn Rovers striker will remain at Ewood Park this season.

Myers tweeted:

“Blackburn striker Ben Brereton Diaz is staying at the club after bids from Fulham and Everton were rejected.

“Owners Venkys were resolute in the fee they wanted for the player and that was not met.”

It’s a huge risk for Lampard

With Everton currently winless in the Premier League over their first five outings and it comes as no surprise that the side are struggling to find winning goals following the exit of Richarlison and the injury to Dominic Calvert-Lewin who has not been available to start over the season so far.

It’s a huge risk for Frank Lampard to not go all out for a striker over Deadline Day even after signing Neal Maupay, as the side are in desperate need for a more clinical attacking threat going forward, something Brereton Diaz could have no doubt supplied.

The Chile international scored 22 goals for Blackburn Rovers last season, and has already served up four goal contributions this season in the Championship over seven appearances, so it could be a decision the powers at Goodison Park will rue if things don’t improve on the pitch for the Toffees.

It has been reported earlier this evening that the club do want to sign another striker over the final hours before the transfer window slams shut, with a late swoop for Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze one of the potential deals Everton can complete to strengthen their forward line at the last chance.

There is a silver lining in Everton’s Deadline Day disappointment in terms of a striker, as it is looking highly likely that Anthony Gordon will remain at the club this season after another Chelsea bid was rejected today, which will surely delight Lampard despite no further forward signings completed today.

Indeed, there is still an opportunity in the final hour for the Merseyside club to complete a deal, however, as the clock ticks down it is looking very unlikely that the club will complete another deal. Risky business indeed given their current predicament.
