Caleb Yirenkyi has completed a reported €30m transfer from FC Nordsjælland to Coventry City, with the Ghana international saying he is determined to justify the club’s faith in him and continue developing under manager Frank Lampard.
The 20-year-old midfielder passed his medical before signing a long-term contract with the Sky Blues ahead of the new Championship season. The deal makes Yirenkyi the most expensive player ever sold by a Scandinavian club.
Yirenkyi said discussions with Lampard played an important role in convincing him that Coventry was the right place to take the next step in his career.
“I’ve heard so much about it and I really feel positive about being here. When I spoke to the head coach about the plans and the style, it’s something I really like, and I look forward to learning from him.”
The move brings Yirenkyi to England after he established himself as one of the leading young players in the Danish Superliga. His performances for FC Nordsjælland had attracted attention from several clubs across Europe, but Coventry ultimately secured his signature.
For Yirenkyi, the transfer is also the latest landmark in the progress of Ghanaian footballers who have used Denmark as a platform for bigger opportunities in European football. He follows in the footsteps of players including Mohammed Kudus and Ernest Nuamah, who also developed in Denmark before moving on to more prominent stages.
The size of the transfer fee means expectations will be high, but Yirenkyi said he would not allow the record deal to distract him from the daily work required to improve.
“I want to give my best to the team each and every day. I’m still young so I want to learn from the head coach, the other players and work really hard for the team.”
He also spoke about his anticipation at playing at the Coventry Building Society Arena, having already been told about the backing the club receives from its supporters.
“I’ve also heard a lot about the fans, they’re incredible and I can’t wait to play in front of them.”
Yirenkyi is expected to join Coventry’s squad immediately as the club continues its preparations for the 2026/27 campaign. Supporters will be eager to see the highly rated Ghanaian begin his career in English football after his record-breaking arrival.
The midfielder’s move gives Coventry a player who has already attracted significant attention at a young age, while Yirenkyi now has the opportunity to work under Lampard and adapt to a new league, country and level of expectation. His first priority, however, will be to settle into his new surroundings and contribute to the Sky Blues as they prepare for the Championship season.
