South Africa are through to the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a heart-stopping 3-2 victory over Zimbabwe on Monday, sealing second place in Group B.
Coach Hugo Broos fielded a strong starting eleven with one clear mission: secure all three points. The team started brightly, taking the lead in the 7th minute when Tshepang Moremi’s shot, set up by Lyle Foster, deflected past the Zimbabwe goalkeeper.
Zimbabwe responded with flair, and in the 19th minute, Tawanda Maswanhise weaved through three defenders before firing a low drive to level the score at 1-1.
The second half promised drama, and it delivered. Just five minutes after the restart, Foster capitalised on a defensive lapse to put South Africa ahead again. But Zimbabwe would not go quietly; an own goal from Aubrey Modiba in the 74th minute drew the game level at 2-2.
When it seemed the contest would end in a stalemate, South Africa were awarded a penalty in the final 10 minutes. Oswin Appollis calmly converted to make it 3-2, sending the Bafana Bafana into celebration and securing their place in the knockout stage alongside Group B winners Egypt.
A thrilling encounter that showcased resilience, drama, and clutch finishing – South Africa are through, and the AFCON adventure continues.
