Sudan, led by former Ghanaian coach James Kwesi Appiah, has secured a spot in the AFCON 2025 round of 16 after defeating Equatorial Guinea 1-0.
The win, courtesy of an own goal by Saúl Coco in the 74th minute, has reignited Sudan’s hopes of progressing further in the tournament.
Appiah’s team had a tough start, losing 1-0 to Algeria in their opening match, but they bounced back strongly against Equatorial Guinea.
Result from other games have confirmed Sudan’s spot in the last 16.
Sudan’s next match is against Burkina Faso on December 31.
Sudan’s qualification for the AFCON last 16 is a remarkable achievement, given the country’s ongoing conflict and the fact that they had to play their qualifying matches away from home.
