Morocco eyes AFCON 2028: ‘It’s not dreaming, we have legitimate ambitions’

Morocco is already considering a bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations, building on the success of the ongoing 2025 tournament, which has earned praise for its organization, world-class stadiums, and smooth logistics.

The North African nation is eager to cement its reputation as a top destination for major football events. At the heart of its plans is the Hassan II Stadium in Casablanca, expected to be completed by 2028 with a staggering 115,000-seat capacity — potentially the largest football stadium in the world.

Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa told L’Équipe, “It’s not dreaming, we have legitimate ambitions.” Beyond stadiums, the country has invested heavily in transport, tourism, and hospitality infrastructure, including modernized airports, high-speed rail links, and upgraded hotels in Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, and Tangier.

CAF recently confirmed that AFCON will move to a four-year cycle starting in 2028, making the next edition particularly significant. While no formal bid has yet been submitted, Morocco’s performance as 2025 hosts is expected to be a major factor in CAF’s evaluation.

The competition to host AFCON 2028 is expected to be fierce, with South Africa, Egypt, and possibly Algeria all considered strong candidates. Meanwhile, AFCON 2027 has already been awarded to the joint bid from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
