Tanzania aim for historic AFCON round of 16 spot against Tunisia

Tanzania will go head-to-head with Tunisia on Tuesday at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, fighting for the second automatic qualification spot in Group C at AFCON 2025.

The Taifa Stars enter the clash off a 1-1 draw with neighbours Uganda, keeping their round of 16 hopes alive for the first time in their history. That result leaves them third in the group with a point from two matches, putting them firmly in control of their destiny — a win over Tunisia would secure their historic progression.

Coach Hemed Suleiman knows the challenge won’t be easy. Tanzania have struggled for consistency, going nine matches without a win, and will need a flawless display to overcome the Carthage Eagles.

Tunisia, meanwhile, have been in strong form, with the 3-2 loss to Nigeria their only defeat in 11 games (W6, D3). Despite trailing 3-0 before a late resurgence, Sami Trabeli’s side know a win on Tuesday guarantees their passage to the knockout stage, seeking redemption after failing to progress beyond the group stage in 2023.

While favourites, Tunisia remain vulnerable at the back, having kept just one clean sheet in their last nine outings — an opening Tanzania will hope to exploit.
