AC Milan and Italy legend Franco Baresi, widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in football history, has died aged 66.
The Rossoneri confirmed the death of their former captain on Thursday, bringing to a close the career of a player whose influence shaped the club across two decades.
“Milan is in tears following the passing of Franco Baresi. His example and integrity will be forever etched into the club’s DNA, just as his iconic number six shirt is,” AC Milan said in a statement.
Baresi spent his entire professional career with AC Milan after making his first-team debut in 1977. He made 719 appearances for the club during 20 seasons before retiring in 1997.
He captained Milan for 15 seasons and was central to one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. During his time at San Siro, Baresi won six Serie A titles, three European Cups and UEFA Champions League trophies, four Supercoppa Italiana titles, two UEFA Super Cups and two Intercontinental Cups.
The defender was also part of one of the most celebrated defensive partnerships in European football. Alongside Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta and Mauro Tassotti, he helped establish Milan as a dominant force in domestic and continental competition.
Baresi’s leadership and reading of the game made him a defining figure of the club’s golden era. His number six shirt was later retired by AC Milan in recognition of his contribution.
He also made 81 appearances for Italy and was included in the squad that won the 1982 FIFA World Cup.
Twelve years later, Baresi captained the Azzurri in the 1994 World Cup final against Brazil. He delivered an outstanding performance after recovering from a serious knee injury, but Italy lost the match on penalties. His display remains one of the most memorable moments of his international career.
Baresi continued to play an important role at AC Milan after ending his career. The club appointed him honorary vice-president in 2020, maintaining his close connection with the institution he had represented throughout his professional life.
He underwent surgery in August 2025 to remove a lung nodule. His final public appearance came at San Siro during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in February.
AC Milan paid a further tribute to Baresi by describing him as the embodiment of the club’s identity.
“Announcing the loss of someone who embodied the heart and soul of AC Milan is incredibly difficult. In memory of Franco, we stand united, knowing he’ll guide and push us throughout our Rossoneri journey. Forever. Because Baresi is forever.”
