Former Real Madrid player Pedja Mijatovic has called for patience with Vinicius Junior, insisting the Brazil forward can return to his best despite a difficult season at the Spanish club.
Vinicius has faced sustained criticism after a noticeable dip in form. His problems have also been compounded by a four-match La Liga suspension following his sending-off against Villarreal.
Speaking on the El Larguero programme, Mijatovic said Vinicius should not be placed under additional pressure while he works to regain confidence.
“I miss a little of Vinicius, and I am convinced that he will recover,” he said. “We have to give him some time and not put too much pressure on him.”
Mijatovic also referred to the disappointment shown by Vinicius when he was substituted in the 70th minute of Real Madrid’s Champions League match against Leipzig on Wednesday.
The Brazilian appeared frustrated as he left the pitch after being replaced by Diomande, although Real Madrid went on to secure a 4-1 victory.
Mijatovic said the presence of Diomande should not be interpreted as evidence that the player is superior to Vinicius.
“With Diomande, we have a player capable of making a difference, but that does not mean he is better than Vinicius,” he said. “In this situation, Vinicius can easily recover his best level.
“I do not think there is any need to rush. We have to wait, and his best days will come without a doubt.”
Mijatovic’s view is shared by Kylian Mbappe, who also defended Vinicius after the victory over Leipzig.
“It is good that Vinicius feels sad because he wants to give a lot to the team and the fans,” Mbappe said. “He has to remain calm and be proud of himself. He is a great player with huge talent.”
Mijatovic identified Jude Bellingham and Thibaut Courtois as the two Real Madrid players who impressed him most during the Leipzig game.
“Bellingham is performing brilliantly and playing exceptionally well,” Mijatovic said. “He is a key player for the team. He gives a lot of confidence, and Mourinho relies heavily on him because the players admire him. He always gives his best.”
The former Real Madrid sporting director was equally emphatic in his assessment of Courtois, describing the goalkeeper as the best in his position.
“Courtois is the best goalkeeper in the world, not only this year but in previous years as well,” he said. “He has great confidence, and his saves are no less important than the goals or attacks created by his team-mates.
“The sense of security he provides is fundamental for any top team.”
