Ghanaian referee Derrick Kwatei Quartey reached a significant milestone in his officiating career after being selected for the 2026 Futsal Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Angola in Rabat.
Quartey was appointed Reserve Assistant Referee for the final on Wednesday, 21 October 2026. It is the first major final appointment of his career and places a Ghanaian official among the referees chosen for one of African futsal’s leading fixtures.
The final was contested by Morocco, who were pursuing another continental title, and Angola, who were aiming to win the competition for the first time.
Experienced officiating team
Quartey formed part of an officiating team led by Tunisian referee Abdelakram El Hentati.
South African official Sipho Machbeth Mahlangu was appointed Referee 2, while Cameroon’s Eric Elingui Mindjih served as Referee 3. Libya’s Mohammed Alsertawi was named Time Keeper.
The appointment followed Quartey’s earlier continental assignment in January 2026, when he was selected as Timekeeper for the Futsal AFCON qualifier between Cape Verde and Senegal.
As Timekeeper, he was responsible for monitoring the match clock, time-outs and accumulated fouls. Those duties require a high degree of concentration and precision in futsal, where play takes place at a faster tempo in an indoor setting.
Morocco retain continental crown
The final was a repeat of the 2024 showpiece, when Morocco defeated Angola to claim the title.
Morocco booked their place in the 2026 final with a 6-0 semi-final victory over Egypt. Angola reached the decider after recovering to beat Algeria 3-2.
The hosts were seeking a record fourth continental title, while Angola were attempting to lift the trophy for the first time.
Morocco ultimately prevailed, defeating Angola 5-1 and adding another star to their jersey.
