Paris Saint-Germain reach agreement to sign Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki

Paris Saint-Germain have agreed a €35m deal to sign Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, according to a report, just hours after announcing the arrival of Lucas Digne from Aston Villa.

The Ligue 1 club are seeking another goalkeeper after Gianluigi Donnarumma’s departure, with the position regarded as the weakest area of Luis Enrique’s squad. Transfer-market specialist Fabrizio Romano says an agreement has already been reached for Japan international Suzuki, who is currently with Parma.

Suzuki, 23, is Japan’s first-choice goalkeeper and is viewed by Paris Saint-Germain as the ideal candidate to strengthen their goalkeeping department. The proposed transfer is expected to be completed soon if the remaining steps proceed as planned.

However, it remains uncertain whether Suzuki would immediately become the club’s number one or would first be expected to gain further experience with a team competing in European competitions.

Paris Saint-Germain have already signed Lucas Chevalier, but the French goalkeeper did not meet expectations, with Matvey Safonov eventually becoming the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Despite their interest in adding another goalkeeper, the French champions believe Safonov’s performances mean he is capable of retaining his place in the starting line-up. As a result, any new arrival would not necessarily be guaranteed the number one position.

The agreement for Suzuki comes on the same day that Paris Saint-Germain officially confirmed the signing of Digne. The 33-year-old France international left-back has joined from Aston Villa on a three-year contract running until the summer of 2029.

The transfer for Digne is worth about €7m and brings him back to the French capital 10 years after he left. He becomes Paris Saint-Germain’s third signing of the summer.

The club’s move for Suzuki reflects their desire to provide greater competition in goal while maintaining the option of continuing with Safonov as their leading goalkeeper. Suzuki’s age and international status make him an attractive long-term option, although his immediate role has yet to be established.

Under Luis Enrique, Paris Saint-Germain are continuing to shape their squad after their latest recruitment moves. The club must now decide whether Suzuki is ready to take on the responsibility of starting immediately or whether a period of adaptation would be more suitable.

Suzuki currently plays for Parma and has established himself as Japan’s first-choice goalkeeper. His possible move to Paris Saint-Germain would be worth €35m, according to Romano, and could be completed in the near future.

The goalkeeper’s arrival would follow Digne’s return to Paris, with the former Aston Villa player becoming the latest addition to the squad. While the French side have reached an agreement for Suzuki, the question of who will start in goal remains unresolved.
