Callum Wilson opts for Ramsdale over Phil Foden as Young Player of the Year

Newcastle star opts for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale over Phil Foden as Young Player of the Year

Newcastle United star Callum Wilson has, on Thursday, revealed his take that Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale was hard done by in not securing for himself the award for Premier League Young Player of the Year.

The latest edition of the YPOTY prize was of course handed out earlier this week.

Manchester City starlet Phil Foden was the recipient of the accolade, making it back-to-back wins for a player widely regarded as one of world football’s finest up-and-coming talents.

And yet, on the back of Foden’s status being made official, many were quick to reveal their opinions that, in fact, the 21-year-old was on this occasion not all that deserving of the award.

Instead, the name of Bukayo Saka took its place centre stage online, amid widespread suggestions that the Arsenal wide-man, owing to his tally of 11 goals and seven assists, should have been crowned Premier League Young Player of the Year.

As alluded to above, though, on Thursday, it is another member of Mikel Arteta’s up-and-coming Gunners squad who has been backed as most deserving of the prize by Newcastle United star Callum Wilson.

The player in question? Aaron Ramsdale.

Speaking in an interview with The Footballer’s Football Podcast, hitman Wilson revealed his take that in silencing his doubters courtesy of an impressive debut campaign in north London, shot-stopper Ramsdale, ‘pipped’ Foden to the post as being most deserving of the accolade.

“Young Player of the Season I’d probably go for Ramsdale at Arsenal,” the Newcastle standout began. “Coming from Bournemouth and Sheffield United, two relegations let’s not forget, and then he’s gone to Arsenal and there was a lot of question marks raised, even from myself who’d played with him before and thought Arsenal ‘is that a step too big’.”

“He’s proved everyone wrong and pulled off some amazing saves. I’d probably say him to be honest, not just because I know him, but Foden is a great player – who I’d put close by – but I think Ramsdale has pipped it for me.”
