Uruguay head coach Diego Alonso is looking forward to the Group H decider against Ghana on Friday.

The two nations will lock horns at the Al-Janoub Stadium in the hope of sealing a spot in the knockout stages of the World Cup.

But there is also a historical context which makes this game one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament.

The South American side recorded a controversial win over Ghana in 2010 World Cup quarter-final.

Uruguayan forward Luis Suárez deliberately handled the ball deep on the goalline in extra time to prevent a certain goal, with Asamoah Gyan missing the resulting spot-kick.

Despite Suárez’s dismissal, Uruguay made the Africans pay in the shootout.

“It’s a different story for both of us,” Alonso said after Uruguay’s 2-0 defeat to Portugal on Monday.

“Both of us will go in search of merit. Friday will be the decider but it is a very different story from what happened 12 years ago.

Portugal have already qualified from Group H but both of these sides have the chance to join them. A victory would guarantee a spot in the next round for Ghana, while a draw would be enough if Portugal avoid defeat against South Korea.

As for Uruguay, they need a victory of their own to advance, but South Korea need to drop points as well.
