Paris St-Germain strengthened their position at the top of the Champions League league phase with a 6-0 victory over Villarreal after scoring four times inside the opening 17 minutes.
The hosts were overwhelmed by a relentless PSG attack, with some Villarreal supporters leaving before the match had reached 20 minutes. The Spanish side’s defensive errors repeatedly handed the visitors opportunities, and they were punished by an attacking unit that had already scored four goals against both Barcelona and Manchester City in Europe this season.
Joao Neves opened the scoring from close range after Villarreal failed to clear a corner. PSG doubled their advantage soon afterwards when they intercepted a misguided pass from goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi and moved the ball to Desire Doue, who finished decisively.
Villarreal were exposed again a minute later as PSG won possession during another attempt to play out from the back. Senny Mayulu collected the ball and drove his shot beyond Gulacsi to make it 3-0.
Fabian Ruiz added a fourth before the 17-minute mark. PSG worked the ball back to the Spain midfielder inside the penalty area, and he struck a low effort inside the near post.
The four-goal start left Villarreal with little prospect of recovering, and PSG continued to control the contest after the interval.
Ruiz scored his second goal of the match to make it 5-0. The midfielder used a deft touch to send his marker to the ground before calmly placing the ball beyond Gulacsi.
Seventeen-year-old David Boly completed the scoring after advancing down the flank and sending his shot into the net via the leg of a Villarreal defender.
The result leaves PSG top of the league phase standings with a perfect 12 points. Their next Champions League fixture is at home to Roma on 25 November, with kick-off at 20:00 GMT.
Villarreal have won only one match in the competition so far. They travel to Slavia Prague on the same date, with that game starting at 17:45 GMT.
